Internal Controls are defined as the systems and procedures established and maintained to safeguard a club’s assets, check the accuracy and reliability of its accounting data, promote operational efficiency, and encourage adherence to prescribed managerial policies.
Internal Control, while often considered an accounting function, is actually a function of management. The ultimate responsibility for good internal controls rests squarely with management. Internal controls should not be considered as a separate, specialized system within the club. Rather, it should be recognized as an integral part of each department and the club as a whole. In this sense, internal controls are management controls.
Internal Controls also facilitate the achievement of management objectives by serving as checks and balances against undesired actions.
